Paper dice are cube nets that fold into real, working dice. Paperoom prints the cut-out nets with classic dots or numbers, or with your own words for story, question or activity dice in the classroom.

How to play

  1. Print on cardstock or thin card. Cut along the solid lines with scissors or a craft knife and a ruler.
  2. Score each dashed fold line with a ruler and a blunt tool, then fold it so the printed side faces outward.
  3. Glue the grey tabs inside the cube one at a time, press each seam flat and let the glue dry before you roll.
  4. Story dice: roll them all and make up a short story that uses every picture word you rolled.
  5. Question dice: roll one die and answer the question on the face you land on, or ask a classmate to answer it.

Tips

  • Use cardstock or a thin cereal box card. Printer paper folds easily but tends to flop.
  • A glue stick is clean and quick. Glue one tab at a time so the paper stays flat while it dries.
  • Score every fold with a ruler before you bend it; the crease is what keeps the cube square.
  • Test fairness by rolling a die 60 times and counting each face. A fair die lands on each face about ten times.

Where it comes from

Cube nets fold into dice, and on a standard die opposite faces add up to seven. Custom faces turn the same cube into story dice, question dice or activity dice for classrooms.

Questions

Why do opposite faces add up to seven?

On a standard die, opposite faces add up to seven. The classic dots and numbers use 1, 2, 3, 5, 4 and 6 so that 1 and 6, 2 and 5, and 3 and 4 sit opposite each other.

Can I use words instead of numbers?

Yes. Choose your own words and enter one face per line. Every six lines make one die, and faces up to 24 characters long may repeat.

What paper should I use?

Cardstock or thin card works best. Thinner paper can be used, but it is easier to bend unevenly and the dice will be less sturdy.

How many dice can I print?

Up to 24 dice in the classic dots or numbers modes. Your own words allow up to 144 faces, which is also 24 dice.
