An exquisite corpse is a folded game. Each player draws or writes one section of a whole, then folds the paper so the next player sees only the join marks.

## How to play

1. Fold the paper along the dashed lines so the sections are hidden from each other.
2. The first player draws or writes the top section, keeping it within the join marks at the bottom.
3. Fold back so only the join marks show, then pass the sheet to the next player.
4. The next player continues from the join marks without looking at the earlier sections.
5. Repeat until every section has a drawing or sentence part, then unfold the sheet and read or look at it together.

## Tips

- Use a suggestion for each section to get started, or leave the sections blank for a wilder result.
- Draw the join marks lightly so the next player can see where to connect their part.
- In story mode, keep each part short. The fun is in how the parts fit together.
- Print several sheets and play in rounds so everyone gets a turn at the top section.

## Where it comes from

The exquisite corpse was developed by Surrealist artists in Paris in the mid-1920s, including André Breton, Yves Tanguy, Marcel Duhamel and Jacques Prévert. Its name comes from an early sentence the group made: "Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau". Each player adds a part without seeing the earlier ones, which is why the finished figure or sentence surprises everyone.

## Questions

### What is the difference between drawing and story mode?

Drawing mode has labelled sections for parts of a figure, such as head, body and legs. Story mode has sections for the parts of a sentence, such as who, where and what happened.

### How many players do I need?

Three to five is a good number. Each player takes one section, so the number of sections is usually the number of players, or fewer sections for a shorter game.

### What do the join marks do?

Each fold line has two short marks that cross it. The next player uses them to line up their part with the part before, even though they cannot see it.

### Can children play this?

Yes. Drawing mode needs no reading, and story mode can be played with younger players using the suggestions as starting ideas.
